Built as a movie palace and opened on April 11, 1930 with 1,285 seats, the Capitol Theatre at 238 King Street West was among the largest venues in southwestern Ontario in its day, hosting film premieres and touring performers such as Buddy Rich and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. The building was converted into a two-screen cinema in 1975 and closed altogether in 1993; the City of Chatham later sold it to the nonprofit Chatham Capitol Theatre Association, which purchased the property in 1996 and completed a full restoration in 2014. Today the 1,210-seat Capitol Theatre operates alongside the smaller Kiwanis Theatre at 75 William Street North under Chatham-Kent Arts + Culture, together hosting concerts, live theatre, comedy, tribute acts, ballet, and film screenings throughout the year.
